Kuwait’s Jurassic Gas Field: A Technical Frontier

Located in northeastern Kuwait, the Jurassic gas field is among the country’s most vital and technically challenging oil and gas resources. Formed during the Jurassic period, the field’s complex geology comprises deep sedimentary rocks, including carbonates, sandstones, and mudstones. Reservoirs are often located 3,000 to 5,000 meters below ground, qualifying as deepwater and deep oil and gas reservoirs.

The field is characterized as a high-sulfur gas field, with extreme reservoir conditions involving high-temperature and high-pressure wells near critical fluid states. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) levels range from 2% to 8%, while carbon dioxide (CO₂) content averages 1% to 3%. These conditions, coupled with pressures between 4,000 and 10,000 psi and temperatures averaging 275°F, present significant safety risks and equipment corrosion challenges.

Comprehensive Solutions for Complex Challenges

Addressing these technical hurdles, FST will deliver a full suite of services, including design, procurement, equipment supply, installation, commissioning, and trial operation. The contract includes 420 units of advanced equipment, such as wellhead control panels (WHCP), solar power systems (SPS), and chemical injection systems (CIS). These systems are engineered to ensure safe, efficient production while mitigating risks like wellbore blockages, hydrate formation, and corrosion under extreme conditions.

Key Milestones and Industry Recognition

On January 12, 2025, KOC representative Ahmad Al Omair visited FST’s factory for an inspection and project kick-off meeting. The visit included evaluations of FST’s production capacity and quality assurance processes. Following the inspection, KOC and FST signed the kick-off meeting document, formally authorizing the commencement of production and delivery.

During the visit, Al Omair praised FST’s technical capabilities and expressed a strong interest in expanding collaboration beyond this project, highlighting potential partnerships for both onshore and offshore projects, as well as intelligent oilfield initiatives.

From January 24th to 25th, 2025, the FAT was carried out at the FST Factory. Two engineers from KOC, Jaber Alenezi and Mahdi Abdulaziz, along with the ABS third-party, witnessed this process. Starting from the document review and proceeding to comprehensive functional and performance tests, the entire process was executed by experienced engineers.Through a series of tests, we minimized the potential problems that might occur after the equipment delivery, providing the customer with an efficient and reliable equipment solution.

The Jurassic gas field accounts for 17.58% of Kuwait’s total recoverable reserves and is projected to reach peak production by 2036. Operated by KOC, a leading player in the Middle East oil industry, the field’s output is critical to Kuwait’s economy, contributing nearly 90% of the national budget.
